The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday said it would require a new warning label for the drug sildenafil, a generic version of Pfizer's Viagra, in an effort to reduce side effects associated with the drug.
Sildenafil is the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), and the first to carry that label, according to an FDA-approved new drug application.
The label is part of the drug's approval to be available in the U. S. in 2023, and was developed by a company called GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA said the drug was effective for about four months, but it would need to be added to other treatment guidelines for ED, including those for men with ED, and for certain people with ED, such as high blood pressure or heart disease.
The FDA said the new label does not apply to sildenafil.
The FDA said it will review the labeling at a later date. It said it is not currently taking into consideration other drug interactions with the drug, including those with nitrates.
The drug's makers include GlaxoSmithKline, Mylan, Lupin and Sandoz. The company said it is working with the FDA to provide the new label on the first day of treatment.
The new label will be available in the first quarter of 2023.

A recent study found that Americans are living longer than they have ever been by the end of the decade, according to a new study from the American Enterprise Institute.
“The average time spent on erectile dysfunction drugs increased from three to five years for men in their 50s,” said study co-author Stephen S. Schondelmeyer, M. D., the institute’s chief medical officer and chairman.
